Helpful Tips for Visiting Denver for a Football Game
If you’re planning a trip to Denver to watch a football game at Empower Field at Mile High, here are some helpful tips and resources based on my experience. Whether you’re a Chiefs fan like me or supporting the Broncos, these suggestions can make your visit smoother, cheaper, and even more fun.
1. Arriving Early is Worth It
Getting to the stadium early is one of the best things you can do. Parking fills up quickly, and arriving at least 2–3 hours before kickoff gives you plenty of time to tailgate, explore, and get a good feel for the atmosphere.

2. Parking & Transportation
Parking near the stadium can be expensive ($100) and crowded, so plan ahead. Here are some options:
- Official stadium parking lots (closest but pricier)
- Nearby private lots within walking distance
- Light Rail: Denver’s RTD light rail system drops you close to the stadium and can save time
- Ride-share apps like Uber or Lyft if you don’t want to deal with traffic
If you choose to drive, make sure to check parking maps ahead of time.
3. What to Bring to the Stadium
Empower Field has a clear bag policy, similar to most NFL stadiums. You can bring:
- A clear bag (12” x 6” x 12”)
- A small clutch or wallet
- Sealed water bottles
- Portable phone chargers
Leave heavy items or large backpacks behind to avoid delays at security.
4. Weather Can Change Fast
Denver weather can shift quickly, even in the same afternoon. It’s smart to bring:
- A light jacket
- Sunscreen
- A hat or beanie depending on the season
- Gloves for late-season games
Check the weather the night before and again the morning of the game.
5. Best Food Options
There are a ton of great food options both inside and outside the stadium. Some tips:
- Eat before the game to save money
- Try local Denver favorites in the stadium like BBQ, tacos, or specialty burgers
- Bring snacks to tailgate if you arrive early
6. Chiefs Fans in Denver
If you’re a visiting fan like me, expect some friendly rivalry. Broncos fans can be loud, but overall the experience is fun and respectful. Wearing your Chiefs gear is totally fine. You’ll run into plenty of other Kansas City fans around the stadium.
7. Exploring Denver After the Game
Denver has a lot to offer beyond football. Some popular places to check out:
- Downtown Denver / 16th Street Mall
- Union Station
- Local breweries
- Larimer Square
- Denver Zoo or Denver Museum of Nature & Science
